no layer baroque

no-layer-baroque-diane-zechman.jpgIt’s time again for the monthly SCS DD/DDA challenge.  This month Jami challenged us with the theme “Where did all the layers go?”  Here’s the deets:

Challenge Focus: Create a NO LAYER card any size, any color. Your card base is it – no additional layers of cardstock or designer paper at all.

Required Element: Masking – use masking or reverse masking in some way to create your design.

Restricted Element: No use of the color pink.

We were, however, allowed to use any embellishments we want.  Just no additional cardstock or papers.

Well, let me start off by saying that this card looked a lot better in my head!  LOL.  Creating a one layer card is not easy for me.  I first thought about dry embossing my background but then I changed my mind and decided to heat emboss all of my images.  I started with a Close to Cocoa card base and embossed the flourish with clear EP.  Then I added the little flowers by embossing them with a brown EP.  The word was embossed with white EP to give it some contrast.  At that point I went back to read the details again and was sooo thankful I put the pink EP back that I was going to use!!!  Eeek…I should have refreshed my memory before starting this project.  And what did that say?  I must use masking?  Uh oh….I was stumped.  After a lot of thought, I finally pulled out the small butterfly from the Cause for Celebration set and masked the left half with a post-it note.  I inked the right half with my Versamark pad.  It was then stamped and embossed with the white EP.  Whew…got the masking in there!  It still looked like it needed some finishing details so I machine stitched a border with brown thread and stitched a ribbon bow in the corner.  It’s not my best work, but I had fun with the challenge and that’s what is important, right?  😉
