born in a stable

Good morning! I thought I was done sharing Christmas projects for the season but today I have one more. The holidays were so busy that I didn’t have time to get a Christmas bible journaling page done yet…so I got one done a few days late.

I first applied some Recollections watercolor crayons to the page and blended them with a baby wipe. Then I stamped with Versafine Black ink and heat set it. Here I used some Sweet ‘n Sassy stamps: Season of Love (retired), Just Be, Note This, Common Words 1 (retired), Love Ya Like a Sister Alpha, Outline Alpha, My Creator (retired).

The watercolor crayons shimmer although you can’t see that in the photos. I also added a bit of gold washi to the bottom.

Have a great day!

I haven’t shared many of my bible journaling pages so I thought I’d pop in quick to share one I have done recently. I get inspired different ways but this is a page that was created after an article I had read. We get so busy during the holidays and sometimes forget what our focus should really be on.

Here I used the Sweet ‘n Sassy Exclamations and Chunky Lowercase Alpha stamp sets and the Fall Leaves & Sunflowers and Pumpkins printables to highlight Ephesians 5:15-20.

I altered a free clipart image of a tea pot that I found with a few of the images and then added some words. The background was created with the Recollections brand of Gelatos and a baby wipe. It really shimmers!

you matter

Several months ago I noticed a headline for a link to an article in my email. I’m not sure if I ever clicked through to read that article but the heading really stuck in my mind… “Dear Me…You Matter”. I knew right away that I wanted to include it in my bible journaling. I’m sure you all have many ideas as well that tend to be “on the back burner” so you may understand how happy I was to get this page done. When I saw the Sweet ‘n Sassy Script Outline Alpha, I knew it would be perfect for what I had envisioned. I also used Itty Bitty Blossoms and the Girl Power Printable.

Psalm 139 13-18 diane zechman

Have you felt overwhelmed, exhausted, forgotten, and it seems like the world moves on without you? I think we all have…especially in the difficult times of our lives. There are times when we feel like we are just a face in the crowd. But we DO matter…we matter to God. He sees us and cares about us. He knows what we are going through. He cares about everything in our lives and His love is endless.

I chose Psalm 139:13-18 to journal these words. (Stop & reflect on the footnote!)

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

Hello! Today I am sharing a bible journaling page that I did with a mix of brand new & previously released Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps. Here I used Free Indeed, Birds & Blooms, Texture Tiles 1, and Note This.

Acts 13 38-39 diane zechman

When I thought about these words, birds with a birdcage came to mind. I wanted the words to still reflect a little of a patriotic theme, though, so I tried to tie it all together. The verse I chose is Acts 13:38-39:

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.

I pulled out an old Sizzix bird cage die and distressed it with ink, then stamped the Texture Tile all over. I cut a little door to open and added some die cut leafy flourishes (MFT) which were also sponged and stamped with a different Texture Tile. One bird was stamped directly on the page and the other was stamped on white cardstock. After cutting it out, I was happy that it’s feet landed perfectly on the cage where I wanted him! The birds, flowers, and arrow were colored with Inktense pencils and a water brush.

Proverbs 12:26

Good morning! Last week I did a bible journaling page with the new Sweet ‘n Sassy Girl Power Printable Bundle. This is a cute printable but is also a little teaser for something coming next month…I think you’ll love it!

Proverbs 12 26 diane zechman

“The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”

The first part of this verse varies a bit in different translations but the second part seems to stay pretty much the same. Other translations read more as “leading & guiding” our friends rather than “choosing” them. Do you know someone who seems to enjoy seeing others fail? God wants us to care for our friends and neighbors and guide them in the right direction, not lead them astray. “The righteous man is not “better” than his neighbor; he only cares about where he is going.” This is a good reminder for all of us. I think I will add some more journaling to this page.

Besides the printable, I also used God is Good, Child of the King, Choose Faith, Teeny Alpha, Furry Friends, Whimsy Bouquet, and Texture Tiles 1. The background is acrylics.

Have a great day!

well-watered garden

Good morning! I have been very lax in sharing my bible journaling pages but I am popping in quick with a page I did yesterday. In case you aren’t aware, I wanted to share with you that Sweet ‘n Sassy Stamps now has Bible Journaling printables (which include a devotional)! There are currently 2 bundles available and another really sweet bundle coming in April!

Here I used the March bundle, Garden of Grace. I had in mind that I wanted to print a girl on a clear sticker and I’m not sure when I came across this verse but I knew it would be perfect for this printable.

Isaiah 58:11 (NIV)  The Lord will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
    and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.

Isaiah 58 11 diane zechman

The background was watercolored and I stamped the words with Versafine Black. I used Living Water, Texture Tiles 1, As the Deer (retired), and Common Words 1 (retired). I wanted to add some more journaling to the page but didn’t want it to become too busy. I’m not sure if I will add it later or leave it as is. But I’m happy with how it turned out.

Have a blessed day!

Romans 8 and a thank you card

Good morning!

Today I am sharing two projects, a card and a bible journaling page, on the Sweet ‘n Sassy blog using the Fantastic Flowers stamp set.  The card I made also uses Kindness Matters.

FF thank you diane zechman

This card is simple but very striking with the flower layered onto the white panel. I simply sponged 3 colors of ink onto white cardstock and stamped the flower on top in black. After I cut the flower out, I hated to throw away the leftover sponged piece, so I stamped the leaves, cut it down to the size I needed, and used it for my background.  I stamped the sentiment and added a few Nuvo drops to finish it off.

After my card was done, I loved the color combo and decided to re-create it in my bible. I chose Romans 8:37-39 to journal. The colors are a little more muted on the bible page but it still turned out fine. I masked the verse and purposely sponged the color lighter on the top left corner.

The same leaves and flower were stamped in black and highlighted a bit with a white pen. “Made for More” was stamped with the Love Ya Like A Sister Alpha. “Nothing can separate us…” was typed on my computer and cut out.

Have a great day!

Psalm 5:11

Hello! Just sharing a bible journaling page that I finished today. I’ve done a few pages recently but two were pretty much cased so I may not share those here and another one I will post later this month.

I’ve seen a few pages done recently with artist Diane Duda’s girls and I loved them so much that I was anxious to do one myself!  I chose this girl and paired her with Psalm 5:11.

Psalm 5 11 diane zechman

I did a search for Diane Duda images and resized one, then traced it in my bible with an Illustrated Faith journaling pen. I doodled around the selected verse and also sketched the branches in the top corner.  The word “rejoice” was hand written and somewhat copied from a font I had. Her dress (the flowered part) was paper pieced with a scrap of DCWV patterned paper. I colored the rest of the page with Prismacolor pencils and blended it with Gamsol. The background was colored light blue which doesn’t show up well here, then I sponged over it with the Tim Holtz Tiles stencil and some SU! Marina Mist ink.

I think that about covers it! It was a fun page to do and I can see some more pages coming in the future which are inspired by this artist!  Have a great evening!

Isaiah 40:8

Good afternoon! Today I journaled these two pages in my bible. A lot of people have been sharing pages done with pretty paper napkins lately…an old technique that has come around again.  It brought back memories of doing the napkins on cards years ago….and I remember even decoupaging napkins onto wicker baskets! Anyone else do that?

Isaiah 40 8 diane zechman

I picked up this pack with a pretty floral design in TJ Maxx a few weeks ago.  Then I decided that Isaiah 40:8 would be a good page to use them on. The verse reads “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” Our earthly things may be beautiful and good, but they can be gone in a moment.  But God will guide us and always be with us. We need to keep Him as our foundation and keep our eyes fixed on what will stand forever.

Isaiah 40 8 close diane zechman

I used various Sweet ‘n Sassy stamp sets for the words… Rebecca Script, Words of Life- Collection 1 and Common Words 1, God Is Good, Message of Hope. They were stamped with Archival Black.

There’s a bit of a learning curve with the napkin technique in figuring out how much gesso to apply. I just “winged it” as I tend to do, but you may want to practice on something else first if you are unsure. I made sure I had a craft sheet under the page I was working on. I brushed clear gesso on the page with a foam brush but you might like using a regular brush or other applicator tool.  Just apply your gesso, adhere your napkin to it, and dry it with a heat tool. Then apply another coat of gesso on top.

Some TIPS:

  1. Be careful not to overwork the second coat of gesso or it will tear the napkin away. If you do have small spots that rip away, you can tear off a small scrap of napkin and fill it in if the pattern on your napkin is forgiving. (I patched two small spots here!)
  2. If you are covering the whole page with a piece of napkin as I did here, I found it helpful to adhere the napkin in two sections. I held it in place where I wanted it, then folded the top half down. While holding it with one hand, I applied gesso to the top with the other hand. Then I laid it back down and smoothed it out and pressed it a bit with an old credit card. Then I folded the bottom up and repeated this on the lower part of the page.
  3. Keep a paper towel handy to wipe your fingers, brush, or credit card if needed.  (The brush may pick up color from the napkin)
  4. Keep scraps of your napkin ready in case you need to patch tears.
  5. To highlight the verse: Before I started, I held the napkin in place  and used a pencil to draw a box on the napkin around the verse. Then I used my scissors to cut it out. Line it back up on the page and apply your gesso in sections as described above.

I hope this was helpful! Have a great weekend!

case-ing hedgies

Sometimes a card or project that is shared just needs to be cased (copied)… just like this journaled page I did yesterday!  I loved the layout when I saw it a few months ago.  I changed a few small details but the main layout was cased from a page done by Andrea Wood of the Sweet ‘n Sassy Creative Worship team.

Job 1 diane zechman

The cute little hedgies and trees are from the As The Deer stamp set and the red lettering is the Chunky Alpha, stamped with Distress ink- Barn Door. The hedgies were stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black onto white cardstock, colored with Copics, cut out and adhered to the page.  The trees were stamped onto scraps of patterned papers.

I love when I get a chance to spend time creating in God’s word…I hope you can do the same.  Have a great week!
